EXCERPT:

Professional Image

Hands-on healing as existed for thousands of years. Unfortunately, the history has shown that massage sometimes has been associated with sex for money. Perhaps no other health care profession has had to fight this kind of stigma, at least to the same degree. Other manual therapy professions have had to deal with claims of quackery because scientific evidence of curative ability was lacking. With all this working against us, it behooves us to apply certain professional practices stringently. To continue to build credibility for our health care profession, every massage therapist must document every massage session. Practitioners who do not consider their modalities "treatment" may consider the possibility that any session that has a health benefit, such as increasing circulation or reducing muscular tension, is a health care modality.

Communication With a Health Care Team

The team approach to health care relies on communication for its success. Information is rarely conveyed in person. Most communication, such as referrals and progress reports, is written form. Other members of the team evaluate our effectiveness by reading our documentation, not by experiencing our touch or hearing client testimonials. The charts and reports must reflect the client outcomes adequately, or ongoing referrals may not ensue. Regular, brief, written communication demonstrate our professionalism and high standards, and substantiate our effectiveness. HCPs are more willing to work with massage therapists who follow familiar lines of communication. Consider this to be the least expensive form of marketing available.
