EXCERPT:

The Public Speaking Circuit

One of the best means of refining your skills is to get on the public speaking circuit. Contact civic clubs, professional societies and networking associations. These organizations are always on the lookout for speakers. The members really enjoy learning specific techniques that improve the quality of their lives.

Even though you usually don't get paid for these presentaions, they are a wonderful training ground. Also, realize that these "free talks" are a promotional tool and the groups usually allow you to give a brief self-promo. Always bring plenty of cards, brochures, and fliers on upcoming seminars or open houses (be sure to schedule at least one event close to the date of your talk). This way if people want more information, they can attend other events. Or they might become a client in you practice. Also, you may be able to sell products and gift certificates after your presentation.

You can find these organizations by contacting your Chamber of Commerce. checking the "Business" section of your newspaper, asking your friends and colleagues, and looking in the phone book under "Civic Clubs," "Professional Societies," "Associations," "Business Groups," and "Networking." Also contact groups to which your target market(s) belong. For example, if one of your markets is people in the recovery process, offer to do a presentation at a bookstore that carries a large selection of titles on the subject. If you do animal massage, contact the veterinary clinics and pet stores. Be creative.
