Add New Skills to Your Massage
Practice
"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live
forever."
—Mahatma Gandhi
Making an investment in your professional development can pay off in
numerous ways.
- It can increase your income and sustain your interest
in what you do.
- You may want to diversify your skills in
order to develop a different or less demanding way of using your body.
- Or, perhaps offering multiple therapies will help your clients who
have particular challenges.
Before pursuing a new modality, evaluate your goals. Do you want to
increase your set of relaxation techniques, build your clinical skills
or take advantage of the growing interests in spa services?
Developing
clinical skills can help you increase you rate of success with clients,
while creating a spa menu can attract clients looking for something
especially luxurious. You may decide that it's the time to add myofascial
release or Healing Touch to your bag of skills. Or if you are really
interested in expanding your horizons, you may decide to get training
as an esthetician, doula or yoga instructor.
Make sure you find out what legal requirements there are, if any, for
practicing your new skills. For example, if you are not an esthetician,
find out what spa services you can offer as a massage therapist.
If
this is where your interest lies, consider that some spa services easily
lend themselves to adding retail products your clients may want to take
home with them. Just remember to start small, and only carry what you
use and believe in yourself.
Whatever you pursue, make sure it is something you feel excited about.
Adding to your professional skills can boost your confidence and satisfaction
in what you do, and keep you passionate about marketing your services.
