Goal-Setting for Success
"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life
you have imagined." —Henry David Thoreau
There's a saying, "If you don't know where you're going, you'll
probably end up somewhere else." Whether starting out in business
or building a practice you've already established, setting goals is
a must.
What would your perfect practice look like? Don't
rush this step. Consider what would happen in your perfect week and
who your ideal client would be. Write this down, talk it out, draw
it up, create a collage with magazine pictures and lines of poetry,
or do whatever it takes to make it real in your mind.
Once you have
a vision, spend time cultivating it. At a specific time every day,
maybe first thing in the morning, picture yourself achieving it.
In your vision, you create your dream and place it deep in your mind.
Then you are ready to set goals.
Goals can be long or short term. Long
term goals are those 3 to 5 years in the future. Short term goals,
up to 3 years, move you toward meeting your long ones.
Once you have a list of goals, break them down to action steps. Number
each step and give each one a deadline.
For example, if a short term
goal is seeing 60 clients in the next month, what do you need to ensure
that happens? What calls do you need to make? Where do you need to
take your brochures? Which of your "sleeper" clients do you
need to contact?
Incorporated into your daily activities, each one these
action steps will help you achieve your goal.
If your goals are to lead to achieving
your vision, spending time and money on them will necessary, and worth
it. The time you spend giving free massage at a health fair is an investment
that will come back to you. Or if, say, you want to attract runners
into your sports massage practice, a well-placed attractive ad in your
local runner's newspaper is likely to pay off down the road.
Create a flourishing practice. Start with a vision, set short and long
term goals, outline action steps and then invest your time, energy and
money in following through.
