Even before the recession, to discount or not to discount was a controversial topic. One MT complained, “ I wish there was more guidance in school about pricing, discounts and pricing.” When you’re struggling to get (or keep) your business afloat, it can be hard to know what to do.

My “boot camp” trainer and I butted heads last week about how she markets her business. She gave me four excuses that surprised me — because I hear the same ones from you every day.
Believe it or not, this was a real mind-opener for me. I realized at the point that massage therapists, bodyworkers and other healing arts practitioners are not the only ones who have issues discussing money and the value of their Work.

46% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. Therefore, I am presuming that 46% of you made some sort of resolution to improve your practice.
You want more clients. You want more of your clients to tell their friends about you. You want to change your practice’s focus from working with the ill and disabled to working with active seniors.
You have resolved to step up the marketing for your massage / bodywork practice.
And by now, mid-January, 75%+ of you Resolvers have “broken” your resolution.
Is this a problem? Heck, no!
Should you feel disheartened and vaguely ashamed? Nah.
Here are 12 steps to get over the discouragement that seems to go along with “broken” resolutions and get on with making your massage / bodywork practice healthy and profitable.
You need a cheerleader.
That’s what I’ve learned after talking to a slew of you during the free 20 minute massage marketing consultations this week.
So here we go. Five cheerleader-y things for you.
1. You Are Absolutely Worth It.
You have studied. You have done your work. You have made the commitment. You — and your profession — deserve to be taken seriously. Yes. You really do.
So many massage therapists, estheticians, energy workers, etc. that I talked to are giving their services away in far too many fundraisers. Or are afraid of raising their rates. Or most of their clients respond only when a deep discount is offered.

When I was a kid, one of my favorite jokes was:
Patient: “Doctor! It hurts when I do this!”
Doctor: “Well, don’t do that.”
I thought of this — and you — as I wheezed down the turn lane of a four lane highway this morning. My mom’s partially blind, selectively deaf and judiciously mulish dog had escaped and I was joggling after her. (Not jogging. Joggling. I don’t jog.)
I am given to understand that when most people with sedentary lifestyles suddenly engage in an inspired-by-death run, they resolve to get in shape. They resolve to get in shape so that when something like this happens again, they will be better able to meet the challenge.
I resolve to never be in the position of chasing after a dog again.

It’s about this time of year — when I’m cleaning the Thanksgiving leftovers out of my fridge to make room for my Christmas dinner leftovers — that I make all sorts of resolutions. And, yes, they are the same ones I made last year: I have got to be better organized.
