Last night I got to talking with Heather Furby about the difficulty in A) balancing personality and professionalism in her website’s text and B) balancing science and spirit while explaining her work to people.
Oh. Yeah. That is a toughie.
Potential clients either back away from words like “energy” and “spirit” claiming they just want their neck to quit hurting so much. Or they go all glassy-eyed when you mention “kinesiology” or “paresthesias” and say they just want to meditate with you.

As I was watching the local Sunday morning news I got a pleasant surprise. The station was interviewing local small (read: “tiny”) business owners about how their businesses are doing lately. A Seattle MT was among them.
She said that she had a slow-down for a while but that things are getting back to where they should be for this time of year. She says that many of her clients have realized that her work alleviates so much of their stress.
I’m sitting in yet another doctor’s waiting room while I am writing this. So far they are 20 minutes late in calling me back.
It used to be (one whole week ago) that this situation would agitate me. Waiting. I would start thinking about all the work on my desk, the people who planned on me coming back on time, my son waiting for me, and the fact that I pay money to sit here and wait. However, I have resolved to enter into a year-long effort to re-balance my life. I shall create some value from these Waiting Room Purgatories.

My craniosacral practitioner, Robin Landsong, has been a lot more relaxed lately. I can tell she’s far more focused when she does her intake with me. She’s truly ready to begin the session.
It’s a subtle thing, but I feel even more valued and more … important, I guess.

Matt and I spent a long weekend with the Heir Apparent in Victoria, B.C. We were lucky to be able to go during Victoria’s “Be A Tourist in Your Own Hometown” weekend. This is when the city sells coupon books for $10 each. These coupons get you into tourist attractions for deep discounts or for free. The point is to encourage Victoria’s residents to go see local attractions for little, if any, money.
I LOVE THIS!
I was never really interested in Victoria’s Nautical Museum or Bug Zoo and admission to them seemed a little pricey, so why would I pay to go? I’d been to Crystal Gardens and Butchart Gardens a lot as a kid, but … I didn’t know if I wanted to pay to see it again. But, hey, when I have a booklet of 2-for-1 coupons, Victoria is the mollusk of my discretion!
As with anything I love, I try to see how it could be applied to a healing arts practice. Here’s my Shower Thought:
You’re going to see some entries that have an asterisk (*) in the title. That tells you I recently had a fabulous, extraordinary flight of marketing fancy. And it probably happened in the shower.
Are my Shower Thoughts well thought-out and ready for you to plug directly into your marketing plan? Heck, no! I’d be surprised if any of them would suit you as-is (though I’d love to hear about it if any of them are).
