“3 Things You Must Do to Recession-Proof Your Practice”

Posted in November 13th, 2008
by Eileen in Beyond the Basics, Website/Blogs

The following is the text of one of our soon-to-be affiliates, Kevin Doherty, L.Ac. He writes a pretty good email, (and blog) I must say. This is good, logical, clearly spelled out information.

There is a link to one of his teleseminars at the bottom of the article. I’ve never taken one through him so would be interested in hearing if anyone out there has and what they think.

All my best,
Eileen

A lot of small business owners are feeling the sting of the economic downturn right now.  I have personally heard many practitioners say that their practices have slowed down significantly over the past couple of months.

Does it have to be this way?  What can you do to ensure than your practice is not adversely affected?

After all, there are many practitioners out there who are still doing fine, some even doing better than ever before.

All it really boils down to is busy practitioners are implementing systems to ensure the stability and growth of their practice that most others are not.

Let’s cover 3 of these crucial steps right now.

1.  Marketing Systems–  A lot of business owners are making the fatal mistake of cutting back on their marketing budget during this time.  This is the last thing you should do.  The life blood of any business boils down to how well and how consistently it is marketed.  You have to make sure that you are actively promoting your practice week in and week out.  An example of this would be setting up 2 lectures in your community every single month.  This is a marketing system that is proven to work (as long as you know how to set it up) and is free or low cost to implement.  Create several marketing systems and stick to them, whether your practice is slow or busy!

2.  Patient Contact Systems– You have to make sure that you have an organized way to stay in touch with old patients, current patients, and prospective patients.  One of the most effective ways to do this is having an ezine, or online newsletter.  I want to encourage you to learn more about this because it’s a big topic and there’s a right way and a wrong way to set up your ezine.  But it is very, very important to have something like this that you implement on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.

3.  Patient Education Systems– You need a structured and effective process that you take each and every patient through.  This willl ensure higher patient retention which is a real issue for many practitioners right now.  You also need to educate people exactly how you can help them with issues that are relevant to this current time.  People have to see the value in coming to see you for the stress or anxiety they feel; it has to be clear to them how spending money (which they’re already worried about) on your practice is going to help alleviate their distress.

All 3 of these are big topics that I encourage you to study in more depth.  Our next teleseminar series will be going into depth on each of these topics and I encourage you to join us if you’re looking for ways to ensure the stability of your practice and even thrive during this time.  It is possible!

You can register at www.buildyourdreampractice.net/attractleads-patientretention.

If this teleclass helps you generate one new patient or retain a current patient for a couple more sessions with you, it will have easily paid for itself.

Sincerely,
Kevin Doherty, L.Ac.

October’s Bits and Pieces: Websites, blogs and random thoughts

Posted in October 31st, 2008

Happy Halloween, all.

“Halloween” is, of course, what “All Hallow’s Eve” has evolved into. It’s surprising how many Northern Hemisphere cultures had big celebrations right around this time. Most marked the end of harvest while girdding up for the long nights of winter.

That’s exactly what it feels like out here today. Mom and I have finished our canning and saucing and pickling. Dad’s been out fishing nearly every evening so I’ve been minding the smoker, too. Our yard is almost put to bed and my husband is currently rearranging the garage to accomodate his winter projects. And it’s raining sideways.

I’m feeling very tucked in.

Websites
I came across Eilzabeth Fletcher Brown’s MassageBusinessCenter the other day. I haven’t had the chance to go through her site in detail but I’ve enjoyed the interviews on her Massage Radio page and also reading the feedback from her readers and her blog. Anybody worked with her? Used her stuff? Report!

September’s Bits & Pieces: Websites, blogs and random thoughts

Posted in September 30th, 2008

Well, I’ll tell you, I’m not even tempted to look at my stock portfolio. On the other hand, I’m getting a lot of weeding done.

I’ve been reading a lot of blogs and articles these last two weeks. Pretty much the advice for small businesses is without much substance: “Offer Incentives, Increase Marketing, Hone Your Tacking System, Keep Your Eye on the Future.” Well, yeah, but most of you were doing this before the DOW dropped 700+ points, right? Yes, the market moves in cycles, but you have to Keep Your Eye on the Future while dealing with the Now.

In my own experience, the hard times have been the best launching places for some of my best ideas. When every thing has been shaved down to the core then plans, goals and paths become crystal clear.

August’s Bits & Pieces: Websites, blogs and random thoughts

Time again for the month’s round up of random things that have been sent or crossed my path. Remember, if you find anything worthwhile send it in so we can share.

Websites (sent in and discovered):

Natural-Life.ca is a Canadian directory of organic grocers, organic farms, natural health practitioners and organic restaurants near Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. They have this blog (updated weekly) which features natural health articles from around the world. I spent a couple hours reading through it last week. Take a look.

July’s Bits & Pieces: Websites, blogs and random thoughts

Here’s a couple things I collected this month. It’s pretty light. We’ve been getting our winter flyer together and taking turns going on vacation.

Websites:

Fran is a regular commenter on this blog and she has an insanely beautiful website. You need to take a look. FusionTherapySpa.com

Alternative Growth Streams, Inc. is fairly recent company founded by Randi Drinkwater (”Drinkwater” is such a cool name). Randi is a business and marketing smartypants who came to alternative therapies as so many do; she had a health challenge that usual Western medicine couldn’t provide a solution to. She has gathered a lot of other business smartypantses to help develop the site and products. I haven’t seen samples of the newsletters yet, but It looks like they walk you through things like marketing your blog and how to do the most effective mailings you can. This is not your usual massage marketing site. It’s rather left brained and without a whiff of essential oils. Has anyone used them? Report!

June’s Bits & Pieces: websites, blogs and random thoughts

by Eileen in Website/Blogs

Here’s some bits and pieces to finish out the month of June.

Websites from your peers (shared with permission):

AlternativeHealthPractice.com is a happy partnership; Dan is a writer, Tara is an ND. Together, they’ve created a positive, useful, heartening site for CAM practitioners. I recommend subscribing.

Prokinetics.co.uk has a very different look and feel to their site. It’s clean with a lot of white space. I’m not certain who their target audience is, but I’m willing to bet it’s urban/professional.

Pull Your Ego Back a Bit: designing and writing your website

Posted in June 26th, 2008
by Eileen in How To, Website/Blogs

Towards the end of my last entry I said I thought you should have a website. You should have one for the same reason you should have a business card or be listed in the phone book; it legitimizes you and your practice.

The only person I know at present who is in the middle of creating a site is my sister.

My sister, Margaret, is a schmancy, smarty-pants speech and language pathologist. I won’t try to describe what she does exactly because she says I always get it wrong and I know she’ll flood my comment box with corrections (don’t deny it, Margie). It is a healing art, though, so there is relevance.

Invitation for Sites & Blogs

Posted in June 23rd, 2008
by Eileen in Website/Blogs

The other day Beth asked me a good question. She wanted to know if I would include a link to her site on our blogroll. (A blogroll is a list of web addresses that a blog author thinks you and other readers will find useful.)

I love that she asked. Marketing Matter’s blogroll will focus on business building sites and blogs that I think you’ll find useful

Beth’s site is about her business so I won’t put it on the roll.

BUT her question poked an obvious idea into my brain.
